The Mealworm

The Yellow Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.) has been bred for decades in the Netherlands. The mealworm is also becoming popular in Europe and the USA.

A few reasons why mealworms are a perfect alternative:

  • Less surface, 1 kg mealworm protein uses 18 m2, 1 kg beef uses almost 200 m2.
  • Less feed, 10kg of feed produces 9 kg of mealworms, 10 kg of feed only provides for 1 kg of beef.
  • Mealworms emit up to 100 times less greenhouse gases than ordinary livestock.
  • Healthy, mealworms contain a lot of proteins and vitamins.

In short, mealworms are gaining popularity as a new protein source. Mealworm protein has a lot of benefits for the environment. All of this makes the mealworm an interesting source of protein for the future, they also taste very good!
